This addition and restoration of a historic home shows what can be done when a builder and client work together to achieve a unified vision. The client fell in love with the location and beauty of this charming, brick four-square house, but the space was too small and many of the rooms didn’t work for their needs. The owner chose Green Square to help them solve some significant design challenges and to create a beautiful space that served their needs.
The solution involved a 1200 square feet two story addition to the back of the house, a new large wrap around deck and screened in porch, an 1800 square feet three car garage with a carriage house that matches the historic home, as well as a complete remodel of the original, historic aspects of the home. This involved moving a number of walls, including some load bearing ones, re-working the stairs and entire first floor circulation, moving the kitchen to another part of the house and even cutting out a large section of the brick exterior wall to open the kitchen up to the new living room. About half of the wood trim you see in these pictures was existing, the rest is new. Can you tell the difference?
This house features an all-new luxury kitchen with loads of space and built-in seating, a new gas fireplace in the living area, a play area for the kids, a sound-proofed home office, and tons of room for entertaining both indoors and out. It includes a number of green features as well including upgraded insulation, high efficiency mechanicals, low VOC finishes, and even a built in 600-gallon rain collection tank under the deck for watering the lawn and garden.
It was quite the challenge, but once complete, the home lives like a dream for a busy, modern family who likes to entertain and have their own private spaces.
